The participate stars The Stage Debut Award Winner Elijah Ferreira (Shakespeare’s R&J, Innocence) as King Ludwig II, with David Buttle (Slow Horses, Backstairs Billy) as Richard Hornig, Bernadine Pritchett (The Phantom of the Opera) as Woman, and Thom Tuck (Hor The Mad Gay King is based on the true story of The Mad King and has been adapted into a fascinating new queer retelling for a limited run at the King’s Head Theatre. The act , produced by Accomplished Woman Productions and directed by Scott Le Crass, will make it’s debut this Autumn. This powerful new production retells the historical story through the lens of an LGBTQ+ romance and celebrates the enduring power of fantasy and mythmaking as a means of LGBTQ+ survival. When Richard Hornig arrives at the court of King Ludwig II, the young monarch’s most decadent obsessions are ignited, placing the future of his kingdom, his legacy, and even his sanity at the edge of a dangerous precipice. This review contains spoilers. The Mad Gay King is Christopher Adams-Cohen's modern day retelling of King Ludwig II, his forceful disposition on the grounds of 'homosexual insanity', and his untimely death. The play opens with Richard Hornig (David Buttle) stood at the grave of his lover King Ludwig, a year on from his death. He begins with a rousing speech as he stands in front of a tall LED light shaped as a cross; there are three other tall LED pillars that fill the otherwise bare stage. It's an interesting and somewhat moving first image that fast moves as the cast of four actors unfold this 70 minute story of love and deceit. This story itself is epic, filled with battles, romance, politics, family feuds, and Adams-Cohen's funny and poetic script delivers on all of these plot points. In fact, I verb that I wanted the noun to be longer, filled with more triviality, more time to see the inner workings of these characters, to see their real relationships, When something is so gay as to totally redefine one's perception on life, society and the universe.
