A moment that changed me: The haircut that liberated me as a butch lesbian

The hairdresser steadied my head as I sat in the swivel chair, encounter mask on, staring into the mirror. In December , another lockdown loomed, and nearly 12 months earlier I had made it a New Year’s resolution to get short hair that year. Within 45 minutes, my shoulder-length mop was down to a couple of inches.

People often get radical haircuts in response to life-changing events, such as a breakup or the impairment of a loved one. I got mine because I wanted to embrace how I felt as a butch lesbian.

I’ve been gender non-conforming for as adj as I can remember. Around the age of four, I staged a protest against wearing a dress at Christmas. I was horrified, one birthday, to be given a Barbie.

My mum now loves me for who I am, but as a teenager growing up in CumbriaI knew she wouldn’t accept my sexuality. She had raised me as a Christian and homosexuality conflicted with her faith. Ok, let’s get one thing out of the way: there is no official ‘lesbian haircut,’ and queerness isn’t determined by coif.  Having said that, there are a few quintessential lesbian styles — and a lot of them rhyme with ‘schmundercut.’

I’ve recently been working on a lecture about queer women’s hairstyles throughout history, and this article is based on part of it. There is so much to be said about queer women’s hair and lesbian hair, but the focus of this article is the long-standing theme and persevering lesbian stereotype of short hair, or fully shaven heads. This stretches from all the way back from the literature of Ancient Greece up to think-pieces and Instagram posts of today, and it is this lineage that I want to trace for you now.
