Lil Nas X reveals why it was 'terrifying' for him to come out publicly

Lil Nas X said he was terrified when he publicly came out in because of his upbringing and the homophobia he said he saw in the music industry.

The "Industry Baby" singer recently chatted with Out magazine and recalled the self-hatred he internalized when growing up in the South.

"Growing up in the Atlanta area, I [saw] a lot of microaggressions towards homosexuality," Lil Nas X explained. The Grammy winner said that because of his experiences, he began "pushing that part of myself in more and more, almost convincing myself that it’s not even actually there."

The year-old said the rap genre also fosters a sense of hyper-masculinity, a mold he said he tried to fit but found the burden too much to bear.

US rapper Lil Nas X has said that when he was younger he hoped being gay was just "a phase".

In an interview with CBS, the Old Town Road hitmaker says he knew as a teenager that he was gay and would "would just pray and pray" that his sexuality "would go away".

In a teaser clip that aired on Monday, the rapper discusses his effort with his sexuality.

But he acknowledges that his fame has made it easier for him to come out.

"Me being in this position, it's easy for me."

Lil Nas X celebrated the conclude of Pride month with a major announcement.

The "Old Town Road" singer took to Twitter on Sunday evening to share an animated visual of his fresh single, "C7osure (You Like)," which he dropped last week. While it seemed like business as usual, the year-old star told fans to pay attention to the song's meaning.

"some of y'all already know, some of y'all don't care, some of y'all not gone fwm [f--k with me] no more. but before this month ends i crave y'all to listen closely to c7osure," he wrote on social media. Before ending the tweet, he added three emojis: the rainbow flag, the starry-eyed face and the sparkling star.
